M31, the Andromeda Galaxy – The famous Andromeda Galaxy is the nearest large galaxy to our own Milky Way. It is so bright that under dark skies it is easily seen by naked eye as a fuzzy patch of light in the northern part of the constellation of Andromeda. Also seen in this photograph are M31’s companion galaxies M110 (below) and M32 (above). M31 is a gigantic collection of billions of stars estimated to be 2.5 million light years away. It has been observed since ancient times and was first catalogued by astronomers as long ago as 905 AD. by write_adam via http://flic.kr/p/L1VCf
