Midstate state park beach closed over health concerns

TODD TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) – The Pennsylvania departments of Health and Conservation and Natural Resources shut down the beach at Cowans Gap State Park in Fulton County.

There will be no swimming until further notice.

Park manager Ryan Donovan says that more than two dozen cases of people who became sick after swimming in the lake between July 18 and July 19.

Donovan says some experienced flu like symptoms, while others suffered from diarrhea and vomiting.

“We will keep the beach closed until we know more,” said Donovan, “The health and safety of our guests, remains our top priority.”

Donovan says they test the water at least twice a week.

The park remains open for camping, boating and other activities.

Officials with DCNR say the beach was closed for a few days earlier this month, because of high levels of E. coli.
