Canada scoops up eight medals during first day of track and field events

TORONTO – What a performance on Tuesday by Team Canada on the first day of track and field at the Pan American Games.

Canada won four gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the first nine events, getting at least one medal in seven of the events.

One of the highlights was Matt Hughes’ victory. His sprint in the last 500 metres of the 3000-metre steeplechase gave him the victory with a time of 8:32.18. While he was happy with the win, he became even more excited when he saw teammate Alexandre Genest behind him.
